I read somewhere that a person who does not love children and flowers is akin to a murderer. Quite a sweeping statement that one. And I have not met or interviewed any murderer so far to subscribe to that. But yes, you do come across a feelingless person once in a while. For instance, I cannot forget this long-time acquaintance of mine, acquaintance because a friend is someone I dont attribute the term to. She said she cannot imagine adopting a kid because "how can I love somebody's child as my own?" No words minced. Left me with a numbed feeling.

Without offending those who do not want to, I think people who adopt have a heart larger than any normal person. It's all about giving up some of your own comforts to take care of another human being, the same as planned pregnancy. Fact is, I love babies so when people say they cannot adopt a baby when they have the means and the time, and worse that they cannot love other children other than their own, I get put off by such people and it does, to a certain extent, affect my relationship with them. Yes, I do have my prejudices and I can't help it in such cases.

So today when I think about Indira, my namesake, who has adopted my Dylan, I want to hero worship her. In fact, I already do. Indira works with the production team of Doordarshan television in Guwahati. And her's is an amazing story, I later found out. A spinster, she lives in a two-bedroom flat, home to five pups, two cats and an 11-year-old daughter, and the latest inmate is Dylan, who has quite easily adjusted himself to this big family. I guess the need to be loved is universal, it attracts everybody. Where there is love, there is no question of adjustment, it binds everyone together.

But first, how Indira has a daughter today. It's not out of wedlock or some illegitimate child as most people wonder. She couldn't even be bothered trying to explain that to an inquisitive and judgemental society, but because she is a good friend of my sister-in-law, I got a peep into the story of her life. For a couple of years, on her way to work, Indira noticed a little orphan roaming around in search of food. She took an instant liking to the little girl and gave her lunchbox to her, something that became a habit over time. One holiday, Indira brought the little child home and fed her a wholesome meal. Meal over, the little girl looked at Indira and said,"Can I call you Mama?" End of story. Little girl found place in Indira's heart and hearth. Today, the mother daughter duo are a team to die for. They dote on each other and live for each other.

The animals found their way to her house in much the same way. From feeding them, she wanted to do more for them, so she brought them all to her house. My sister-in-law says she would even take casual leave if she found a stray ill dog, she would take it to the hospital and spend time and money to treat it. If I do idolise saints, Gods or Goddesses, I'd double that love and respect for someone like Indira. Bless her mighty heart!
